Jack’s Journey: Overcoming Degenerative Myelopathy with Mobility and Independence

Jack’s Journey: Overcoming Degenerative Myelopathy with Mobility and Independence

Jack, a lovable 70-pound hound mix, recently embarked on a life-changing journey with the help of OrthoPaws. His dedicated pet parent, Laura, was determined to find the best mobility solution after Jack was diagnosed with degenerative myelopathy (DM).

Referred by their veterinarian at Seminole Animal Hospital in St. Petersburg, Laura sought a custom wheelchair to give Jack the independence he deserved.

As a neuropsychologist living with multiple sclerosis, Laura understood mobility challenges firsthand. Assisting Jack became increasingly difficult, and she needed a solution that would help both of them navigate daily life with ease.

Understanding Degenerative Myelopathy

Degenerative myelopathy is a progressive neurological disorder that affects the spinal cord in dogs, leading to gradual mobility loss. Laura first noticed changes in Jack’s walking in March, and by May, an at-home diagnostic test from Embark confirmed the diagnosis. With her background in neuropsychology, Laura quickly recognized the symptoms and took action early.

During a veterinary visit, Laura explored different options for Jack. Many online wheelchairs, like those available on Amazon, often lack proper fitting, leading to discomfort or further complications. Recognizing the importance of a tailored approach, Jack’s veterinarian recommended OrthoPaws for a custom solution.

Finding the Right Fit: A Custom Solution

To meet Jack’s unique needs, OrthoPaws collaborated with Eddie’s Wheels to design a custom “variable axle” cart with a removable saddle—a feature typically reserved for dogs over 90 pounds. However, given Laura’s condition, lifting Jack into a standard wheelchair would be difficult. By customizing Jack’s cart, we ensured both he and Laura could enjoy an improved quality of life without added strain.

The wait for Jack’s cart was 2-3 weeks, but anticipation grew knowing that a better mobility solution was on its way.

Delivery Day: Adjusting to a New Way of Moving

When Jack’s custom wheelchair finally arrived, his reaction was typical of dogs trying new mobility devices—he froze. Standing still for three minutes, Jack was unsure of his next step. With gentle encouragement and patience, he slowly began to move forward, testing out his new wheels.

Laura was initially worried about the adjustment period, but we reassured her that acclimating to a wheelchair takes time. Just five days later, she shared an update that warmed our hearts—Jack was running again! Seeing him take walks and enjoy life as he once did was a moment of pure joy.

A Story of Resilience and Hope

Jack’s story is a testament to patience, trust, and finding the right mobility tools. Thanks to the support of Seminole Animal Hospital and Laura’s commitment to his well-being, Jack regained his independence. His journey serves as an inspiration for other pet parents facing similar challenges.

Insights for Veterinarians

For veterinary professionals, Jack’s case highlights the importance of properly fitted mobility devices for pets with degenerative conditions. Many pet parents turn to generic solutions that may not provide adequate support. Encouraging discussions about custom mobility solutions can significantly improve a pet’s quality of life and help caregivers manage their pet’s needs more effectively.
