Huckleberry’s Comeback: Braces, Prosthetic, and Wheels for a New Life on the Move

Huckleberry’s Comeback: Braces, Prosthetic, and Wheels for a New Life on the Move

At OrthoPaws, we get to meet some truly extraordinary patients.

One of them is Huckleberry—a determined pup referred by Dr. Burns at All Creatures Hospital in the Tampa Bay area.

What began as a straightforward case for custom knee braces turned into one of the most complex and rewarding journeys we've had the privilege to support.

Starting Point: Double Knee Instability

Huckleberry was initially referred for custom dog knee braces after a surgical repair on one stifle (knee) failed. The other leg was also showing signs of weakness.

To support both hind limbs and ease his recovery, we designed custom braces for each knee and recommended a supportive dog wheelchair to help reduce strain and keep him moving.

A Setback: Hip Dislocation and FHO Surgery

Just before his braces were ready for fitting, Huckleberry faced another challenge—his hip dislocated, and he required FHO surgery (femoral head ostectomy) to relieve pain and preserve mobility.

His care team quickly adjusted the plan. While recovering under supportive boarding, something unexpected occurred.

A Rare Complication: Paw Necrosis and Amputation

While his hip was being stabilized post-surgery, the external support unintentionally created a tourniquet effect, restricting blood flow to his paw.

Despite a fast response and the best efforts of his veterinary team, the tissue became necrotic. Amputation was the only viable option.

The surgeon contacted us again—this time to consult on the ideal amputation site and begin planning for a future dog prosthetic limb that would offer the best possible fit and function.

The OrthoPaws Plan: Prosthetic + Wheelchair + Braces = Full Support

We casted Huckleberry right at the hospital and got to work fabricating a custom prosthetic limb tailored to his anatomy and lifestyle.

With his new prosthetic, knee braces, and wheelchair in place, Huckleberry was ready to walk again.

At first, he was cautious and wobbly—still figuring things out. But day by day, his confidence grew. His adaptability was remarkable, proving just how much progress is possible with the right support system.

A Team Effort: Family Love, Expert Veterinary Care, and Tailored Mobility Solutions

Huckleberry’s recovery was made possible through true collaboration.

Dr. Burns and the surgical team provided expert, compassionate care. His family gave him the love and encouragement he needed. And we brought in the technical expertise to build a mobility plan made just for him.

Whether Huckleberry will eventually walk without any assistive devices is still unknown.

But what’s clear is this: without his mobility aids and the team that stood behind him, he wouldn’t be enjoying life the way he is now.

Today, he’s back to sniffing, exploring, and doing all the things a curious pup loves to do—and we couldn’t be prouder to be part of his journey.
