Chance’s Journey: Overcoming a Congenital Limb Deficiency with a Custom Brace

Chance, a beautiful 10-month-old retriever, was born with a congenital limb deficiency that significantly impacted his mobility. His right paw is missing several bones, and his limb is about three inches shorter than the other. Without proper support, walking for more than a few minutes becomes painful, as his underdeveloped wrist and sensitive paw bear an unnatural load.

Finding the Right Mobility Solution

Determined to find a solution, Chance’s pet parent reached out to multiple animal orthotics and prosthetics (O&P) companies, but after receiving no response, they turned to OrthoPaws. Traveling four hours from West Palm Beach, Florida, Chance’s family made the trip in hopes of finding the right custom brace to support his unique anatomy.

After evaluating Chance’s condition, we decided to craft a Hero Carpal Brace, designed to provide structural support while addressing the height discrepancy between his limbs. To ensure an optimal fit, we cast him and took an impression of his healthy limb for anatomical and height comparison, allowing us to create a brace that would be both functional and comfortable.

A Custom Brace Designed for Comfort & Stability

As liaisons for Hero Braces, we facilitated the fabrication of Chance’s custom brace—a hybrid between a brace and a prosthesis—tailored to his specific needs. This device provides much-needed support, reducing discomfort and helping him stay active for longer periods.

Since receiving his new brace, Chance has made incredible progress. His pet parent has noticed that he is much more comfortable, able to walk and play without experiencing pain after just a few minutes. Seeing the positive impact this brace has had on his mobility has been incredibly rewarding.

Veterinary Insights: Addressing Limb Deficiencies with Orthotic Support

Congenital limb deficiencies can lead to significant discomfort, joint strain, and long-term mobility issues. Without proper intervention, dogs like Chance may develop secondary orthopedic problems due to compensatory movement patterns.

Custom orthotic solutions help distribute weight more evenly, reduce strain on other joints, and allow for more natural movement. By proactively supporting pets with limb deficiencies, we can prevent future complications and improve overall quality of life.
